This position performs personal fitness training at the Recreation Center and is responsible for creating exercise and fitness plans for a wide range of clients.
MAJOR DUTIES
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Recreation Coordinator assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include policy and safety manuals and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Starting pay is $20.974 per hour; along with health, dental, and life insurance. Paid vacation and member of South Dakota Retirement System.

MAJOR DUTIES
- Lead clients through exercise routines.
- Evaluate client fitness level and skillset to plan reachable goals.
- Monitors client through strength training and weightlifting.
- Counsels and educates clients on diet, nutrition, and exercise.
- Creates a workout plan tailored to client needs.
- Charts and tracks client progress.
- Motivates and encourages client through positive words while training.
- Ensures equipment use and physical exercises are performed safely.
- Adjust client personalized plans as goals are reached.
- Leads group classes on proper exercise routines.
- Assists in developing and managing community health and wellness programming.
- Educate clients on weight lifting and training equipment.
- Demonstrates and encourages correct warm-up and stretching techniques to avoid injury.
- Performs CPR, first aid, or other emergency procedures if needed.
- Educates a wide range of clients of all ages based on their fitness capabilities.
- Follows all health and safety regulations when working with equipment.
- Performs general repairs and maintenance.
- Performs custodial duties; cleans and sanitizes restrooms; cleans floors, windows, and furniture.
- Opens facilities.
- Assists with snow removal operations.
- Performs related duties.

- The work consists of related personal training, maintenance, and customer service duties. The variety of tasks to be performed contributes to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to implement fitness and wellness programming for youth, adult, and seniors. Successful performance contributes to the provision of health and fitness services to the public.

- Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, contractors, school staff, members of sports associations, and the general public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, motivate persons, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while standing, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee lifts light and heavy objects and must be able to demonstrate the physical activity he or she will be administering.
- The work is performed in a recreation center.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position may have functional supervision over assigned personnel.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to a high school diploma.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- First Aid and CPR training and certification required.
- Appropriate professional certification preferred.
